Character Name: John "Jack" Torrance
Series: The Shining | Book.
Timeline: Prior to the scene in the bar, just after having his first drink in almost two months. He falls off the wagon rather spectacularly and into wonderland.
Canon Resource Link: Here.
Character History: Give us a brief description of their role in their canon; this may include their origins, interactions with other characters, and their role in future events-- if you plan on taking them from an earlier point in their series. While we don't require a novel, we ask that you show an understanding of where the character is coming from. This is especially important for minor characters, where information may be limited. For the purposes of the application, please stick to CANON history, or what has officially been mentioned. (ie. creator interviews, additional material, etc). Also PLEASE do NOT write us a personality section - the personality should come across in the events you choose to focus on.
Abilities/Special Powers:
PAINFULLY NORMAL BLUE-COLLAR EMPLOYMENT Jack supported himself through college with odd jobs including but not limited to topiary trimming (once a week!), groundskeeping, and basic building maintenance. This includes:
ROOFING Jack is used to working with shingles and tiles and capable of roofing.
EXTERMINATION Bug bombs and basic insect taking care of. He had a wasp nest in his room as a kid! (And put one in his son's room.)
BOILER REPAIR! Jack is very good with boiler repair and building maintenance. It's his job. He can do the most basic maintenance work on boilers and elevators.
In addition to painfully normal blue-collar employment Jack has delusions of grandeur - that he'll one day make something of himself with writing. That he'll be the next great American writer. Naturally because he's a writer he employs what Steven King calls the "Hemingway Defense."
"I drink, because I am a sensitive man. But real men don't talk about how they are feeling. Only sissy men do that. Therefore I drink, to offset the demons."
- Steven King.
He currently has a play that he's working on involving Deker - a school master, and a student. At the time of the canon point he's becoming disenchanted with his hero and the tragedy that he's attempting to write.
Third-Person Sample:
Jack remembered when Danny was born.
That was chief on his mind, sitting at the bar in the middle of wonderland (How about that? How about that?). Had any father rushed to his wife's side to hold their child so quickly? (Isn't that how it goes? Like father like son?) Maybe that was it, his own shining. He knew then the boy'd be special. Or maybe it was simply the act of creation that left people like stars in the dark. He never told Wendy how he used to stand over the Goodwill crib they'd bought for hours. How much he enjoyed holding the small sleeping creature no matter the circumstances. It seemed perverse, unmanly to love a thing so much that was not his wife.
Fuck, he was a writer. Maybe the little bastard had nothing to do with it.
His head hurt. Alcohol fixed that. Whether it was the absence of the hotel that made it so or the disconnection between this reality and the next. Different realities, alternative dimensions, once upon a time these were a fictional playground but like the place he'd left the possibility was suddenly very, very real. Curled up in the corner of the bar he raised his dark gin glass to the heavens.
"To the martians. Not only have they landed, but they've apparently built alternative realities. To Wonderland."
He raises an eyebrow and glances around the room, "My apparent final resting place. How about that."
His hands shake as he downs the gin. Running his tongue over his teeth he laughs, "It could be worse. At least I'm finally safe."
The world pressed down on him. Everything from the fine finishings to the carpet, closing in like a mouth - the worst kind of mouth. The mouth with teeth made of secrets.
First-Person Sample: Show us that you can portray the character’s voice in a network post. Minimum of five sentences.
